Supermarket giant Tesco appears to have, finally, been shamed into taking action to clean up the houses it bought, and allowed to go into disrepair, on London Road. I spotted a large skip and worker's vans there when I passed this morning. They appear to be stripping out carpets, fixtures and fittings - I suspect in an effort to offer the Victorian houses as rental accomodation.
Tesco's plans to turn the Conservation Area site into a superstore were successfully fought off by a non-partisan, grassroots campaign. Many city centre residents feel it's the perfect site for a much needed school and the perfect location for homes aimed at commuters into London.
